When you’re in the process of moving, the first thing on your mind is to prepare for the expensive or complex moving processes to ensure you have an efficient and seamless move. However, it’s usually the smaller or insignificant parts of moving that cause delay and frustration. One of the biggest delays? Clutter.
The clutter in your office is going to cost more to move and if left for the last minute, more labor and time than necessary to sort through. However, if you prioritize a purge as one of your first tasks you’ll quickly be able to power through and could potentially get a cheaper estimate from your Chicago office movers.
The process of decluttering is more arduous than anything, but working through these steps should help minimize some of the redundancy and increase efficiency.
Determine Your Hot Spots
When surveying your office, determine which area – or areas – is likely to be the most cluttered. These are usually the rooms where admin or filing is conducted, followed by common areas. In these areas, you will need a team to determine what stays and what goes. Remember, the goal during this process is to eliminate transporting junk from one office to the other. Not only is it going to be more costly, but it will also greatly diminish productivity.
Delegate
Every employee should have a role in the decluttering of the office, whether this is for common areas or personal space, like their desks. The goal is to ensure every area only has what’s necessary for the run-up to the move.
Shred
Shredding doesn’t need any explanation. But ensure that employees are aware that they should be shredding documents and other sensitive information as they go. And because shredding can be time-consuming, be sure you also have a team for that.
Donate
If anything is still in good condition, like unused stationery, consider donating it. It will probably work out to be cheaper to purchase new supplies in your new office than holding onto supplies that could be years old. At this stage, you may also want to consider trading in some of your older office furniture.
Maintain
The final step in the process is to maintain the clutter-free environment you’ve developed after the purge. Be sure employees are maintaining their areas and files and documents aren’t stacking up.
